It’s a high-altitude trekking circuit in Nepal that loops through the Khumbu region and crosses three major mountain passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La. Unlike the classic Everest Base Camp trek, this route pushes higher, longer, and deeper into glacial valleys, frozen ridges, and windswept plateaus. Many itineraries include Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes along the way, making it one of the most scenic and physically intense treks in the Himalayas. The trek rewards you with vast 360-degree mountain views, quiet high trails, and a raw sense of remoteness you won’t find on shorter routes.
Most trekkers complete the full circuit in 18 to 21 days. The range isn’t arbitrary, it exists because this route demands careful acclimatization, which means intentionally slowing down at key villages to let your body adjust to altitude. On some days you’ll walk 5 hours, on others 8 or 9, depending on terrain and elevation gain. Rest days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche are often built into itineraries. These pauses aren’t idle; they usually include short, high hikes followed by a return to lower sleeping altitudes. The extra days act as a safety net, increasing comfort, success rates, and the chance of clear weather windows when crossing the passes.
Kongma La stands at about 5,535 m, Cho La at 5,420 m, and Renjo La at 5,360 m. Each pass feels distinct when you stand on them, Kongma La often involves loose moraine and early-morning frost glittering on stone, Cho La usually carries snow patches and a sharper chill from nearby glaciers, and Renjo La opens up dramatic views toward Gokyo’s lake system. Because all three cross well above 5,000 m, the air thins noticeably, and even strong hikers can feel breathless. That’s why the route is considered strenuous, it isn’t just about elevation, but how repeatedly crossing these heights taxes the body if pacing and acclimatization aren’t respected.
The trek typically covers 160 to 170 kilometers round-trip. Distance alone doesn’t describe the trek fully, much of this mileage is gained on steep ascents, rocky descents, and uneven glacial paths. Trails shift between river valleys and high ridgelines, and you’ll cross iconic Sherpa suspension bridges where prayer flags ripple overhead. Some side routes add a few extra kilometers, especially around Gokyo or the approach to Base Camp, but the distance is always managed around acclimatization and safety, not speed.
Yes, it’s one of Nepal’s most challenging treks. Difficulty comes from long days, remote terrain, and high passes that may carry snow, ice, or strong wind. The trek isn’t technical like mountaineering, but conditions can feel harsh when you’re up high before sunrise, boots crunching through frost, breath visible in the air. The remoteness means fewer evacuation points and more dependence on your trekking team. That’s why preparation matters more than raw experience, fitness, hydration, proper layering, and rest strategies often determine success more than age or prior trekking résumé.
Most trek itineraries do include Everest Base Camp, usually from Gorak Shep. It’s a meaningful addition after days of climbing toward the passes, reaching Base Camp lets you feel the scale of Everest’s south face up close, surrounded by glacier debris and colorful expedition tents. It isn’t the highest point, but it’s a milestone with emotional weight. Many trekkers say it’s where the trek feels “real,” quieter, colder, and more monumental than they imagined.
Kongma La is the highest at about 5,535 m. The climb to it can feel like a long conversation between you and the mountain steady switchbacks, rocky scrambles, and a final push where the wind can pick up sharply. It’s often crossed early in the day, so snow and frost are common, especially near the top. From there, the view stretches over jagged peaks and deep glacial bowls.
Spring and autumn are the safest seasons. Spring brings milder days and rhododendron blooms in lower villages, while autumn offers crisp skies and sharp visibility. The winter months can be brutally cold, and monsoon season increases cloud cover, rain, and slippery trails. These two seasons balance safety, clarity, and comfort, while also providing enough teahouse support along the route.
Yes. The trek passes through Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu rural region, so park and local permits are required. They aren’t just formalities they fund conservation, trail maintenance, and community support. Without them, you can’t legally enter or complete the trek.
It’s legally allowed to trek independently, but the route is restricted enough, high enough, and remote enough that guides are strongly recommended. A good guide helps with pacing, symptoms of altitude sickness, weather decisions, lodging logistics, and cultural connections. They often become the quiet backbone of the trip, adjusting the plan without drama, spotting issues early, and keeping the trek flowing safely.
Yes, and it’s the most common health risk. Because the trek repeatedly crosses elevations above 5,000 m, the body can struggle if ascent is rushed. Prevention is realistic, not complicated: climb high, sleep lower, hydrate constantly, eat warm meals, and take acclimatization days seriously. Symptoms are monitored closely on this trek because help points are further apart than on shorter routes.
The trek highlights include massive Himalayan panoramas, the glacier-lined approach to Cho La, the turquoise stillness of Gokyo Lakes, the spiritual calm around Tengboche Monastery, and the triumph of crossing all three passes. The views include Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and dozens of unnamed ridges that feel close enough to touch in clear weather. It’s a trek that feels both vast and intimate, silent mornings, wind-brushed afternoons, yak bells drifting from the valley below.
Costs vary by season and service level. Because the trek is longer and more remote than standard Everest Base Camp routes, the price is usually higher due to guide support, porter logistics, accommodation, and permits. Group joining treks cost less than fully private supported treks. Flights or helicopter add-ons can increase the total cost significantly.
Usually 2 to 3 acclimatization days are included. These are often spent in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. They include shorter hikes to higher altitudes followed by sleeping at safer, lower elevations. These days dramatically increase trek comfort and safety.
Nights can drop to −5 °C to −15 °C at higher camps, sometimes lower depending on weather. Daytime temperatures are usually milder in season, but the cold feels sharper due to wind and altitude. Proper layering is essential.
Yes, but only with excellent preparation and guided pacing. It’s better suited for experienced trekkers, but first-timers can attempt it if they are fit, properly equipped, and supported by a licensed guide.
Mostly teahouses and lodges with simple rooms, warm meals, and shared facilities. As altitude increases, services get more basic, but teahouses remain the most dependable support network on the trail.
Wi-Fi exists in lower villages like Namche Bazaar but gets slower and less reliable at higher altitudes. It often comes with a small cost.
Mobile signal works in many lower and mid-trail villages, but fades as altitude increases. It’s not reliable near all high passes.
No direct airport exists at the passes or Base Camp. Helicopter returns are arranged from spots like Namche or Syangboche, not from base camp itself.
Larkya La is not part of the Everest region, it belongs to the Manaslu Circuit Trek, not the Three High Passes route.
Very high when done with acclimatization and proper pacing. Most failures occur only when altitude guidelines are ignored or weather blocks progress.
Porters typically carry up to 20–25 kg per trekker, often split between 2 trekkers’ luggage for balance.
Not legally required but strongly recommended. It should cover trekking above 5,000 m and helicopter evacuation.
Yes for teens or fit older children. Very small kids are not recommended due to altitude and cold.
No official age limit, but strong heart and lung health are essential. Medical clearance is wise for older trekkers.
Cho La is often considered the most unpredictable due to snow, ice, and glacier proximity, making footing tricky.
Most days range from 5 to 9 hours, depending on altitude and terrain.
Not if done with a licensed guide, proper acclimatization, warm gear, hydration, and weather awareness.
Warm layered clothing, sturdy boots, trekking poles, sun protection, a high-altitude-rated sleeping bag, first-aid basics, and a durable daypack are essential.
Not from all of them directly, but the circuit constantly reveals Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and surrounding giants from multiple angles.
No technical climbing ropes are needed, but microspikes or poles are helpful when snow appears on passes.
