Apple Pie Trek: The Annapurna Circuit Adventure in Nepal
The Apple Pie Trek, popularly known as the Annapurna Circuit Trek, is one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking adventures. Famous for its stunning landscapes, cultural richness, and diverse terrain, this trek takes you around the massive Annapurna Himalayan range.
Originally a month-long trek, the trail has become shorter due to road construction to Manang and flights from Jomsom. Despite fewer walking days, the charm and beauty of the trek remain intact, attracting thousands of trekkers from all over the world. The trail also provides access to the Nar Phu Valley Trek, and it intersects with routes from the Manaslu Circuit Trek, allowing adventurous trekkers to combine multiple treks.
Traversing the Trail through River Valleys and Mountains
The trek typically begins with a drive to Besi Sahar and further to Bahundanda, providing a safer and more scenic starting point. The initial trail follows the Marshyangdi River Valley, a lower-elevation area that gradually prepares trekkers for higher altitudes.
-
Average walking time: ~5 hours per day
-
Gradual elevation gain helps with acclimatization
-
Overnight stays are carefully planned in villages along the trail
The trek climbs from lush river valleys to dramatic high mountains, eventually reaching Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters above sea level, which separates the Marshyangdi and Kali Gandaki River Valleys.
For trekkers with limited time, a flight from Jomsom to Pokhara can shorten the trek. Alternatively, those seeking a longer adventure can continue toward Tatopani in the Kali Gandaki Valley.
Why Is It Called the Apple Pie Trek?
The trek earned its nickname, the Apple Pie Trek, for a combination of popularity and culinary delight.
-
Local apple pies are a favorite treat among trekkers along the trail.
-
The Annapurna Circuit offers well-maintained lodges, food, and services, making it accessible even for first-time trekkers.
-
Despite being a high Himalayan trek, the trail is relatively easy to navigate, with comfortable accommodations and delicious local food, giving it the charm of an “Apple Pie” experience.
The combination of Himalayan adventure, scenic beauty, and culinary delights makes the trek truly memorable.
The Walking Route
Most trekkers start from Besi Sahar and finish in Jomsom, flying back to Pokhara. This route allows for gradual acclimatization and smooth trekking experience.
Alternative routes include starting from Nayapul, passing through Ghorepani and Tatopani, and trekking to Thorong La Pass via Muktinath. Both routes offer:
-
The classic horseshoe-shaped Annapurna Circuit
-
Stunning mountain panoramas and river valley views
-
Immersion in local culture and villages along the trail
Even though the trek has become shorter in recent years, it retains its breathtaking scenery, cultural richness, and adventurous spirit, making it a true gem of Himalayan trekking in Nepal.
